Character History:
Manic was born to Queen Aleena as a prince of Mobotropolis. However, when he was still a baby Mobotropolis was taken over by Dr. Robotnik and the royal family was forced into exile. In order to help fulfill a prophecy that would bring peace to Mobius, Queen Aleena had to give up her children. Manic was left on the doorstep in a lower class section of the city, but was picked up by a thief no sooner than Aleena had left and taken in to be raised by Farrel. At a very young age he began to learn how to steal, but Farrel raised him with plenty of kindness so despite having very little, Manic was pretty content with his life.
One night, many years later, he heard a song from seemingly nowhere. While he found this strange, he apparently didn’t bring it up to anyone. Shortly after that, he heard a guitar riff that he recognized while returning home with Farrel and, after telling Farrel he'd see him back at the hideout, followed it to a club where he ended up in his first jam session with Sonic and Sonia.
The club was suddenly raided by Sawtbots and Sonic helped him and Sonia escape after telling them that they were all siblings, also promising to meet up with them later and explain things. Manic returned to the hideout to find Farrel missing, having been arrested during a raid. With nowhere else to go, he met up with Sonic and Sonia again, finding that they were both in a similar situation. Just as they resolved to work together to save their families, the Oracle of Delphius appeared to inform them that they were too late and their guardians had already been roboticized.
He then set them on the path of "discovery and bonding" they’d need to follow to eventually defeat Robotnik, giving them a map to follow. They spent the night in a safehouse, but were nearly captured by the bounty hunters, Sleet and Dingo, as they were about to set out on their journey. They escaped and exited the basement through the sewers with Manic and Sonia soon developing their first, and recurring, disagreement: the subject of sewers. Along the way they began to learn a little about each other and though Manic tried to avoid telling them he was a thief outright, Sonic caught onto his occupation easily. Overall, it went over better than expected, since none of them had actually chosen the lifestyles they'd found themselves in.
When they reached the forest they’d been traveling to they met Gondar, who had been sent by the Oracle to train them in their natural abilities. While Sonic and Sonia's training focused on using their speed and power to attack, Manic learned to use his drumsticks as effective and accurate weapons; but he felt that his abilities weren’t on par with those of his siblings and considered leaving so that he didn’t slow them down. Gondar informed him that this was a mistake, and that he would one day find his own hidden talents.
Sleet and Dingo arrived to capture them again, but were defeated by the trees in the forest, which shot sap over their fleet and gummed up the engines to make the airships crash. Gondar then gave them a scroll, which transported them to the temple in Trelata where they would continue their training. Upon arrival they learned that their medallions were a source of great power, the most basic use being the power of music. The other powers would require the siblings to find harmony with each other.
The first training session involved the illusion of a locked room and a large monster. Sonic had rushed in to try to take on the beast, but Manic knew the lock and got the door open instead of trying to fight. When Sonic was caught by the monster, Sonia got herself caught trying to save him and they failed training. The monk told them that there would be no more training, pointing out that Sonia had her heart in the right place but had used poor judgement and Manic's actions had been correct, so if they'd worked together they'd have escaped easily. Sonic realized it was his fault they'd failed, but while he was being berated by the monk over his recklessness Sonia and Manic defended their brother. That, it turned out, had been the real test and it was determined that their training would continue. The rest of that day, however, was spent jamming out on their new instruments.
The next training session, they focused on trying get their weapons to work and use them to defeat a dragon. When Manic used his drums to shoot a rock at the dragon, the resulting earthquake caused Sonic to berate him over using an earthquake on a flying enemy, which broke their harmony and caused their weapons to vanish. After Sonia noticed the dragon never landed and hadn't let the launched rock touch it, she brought up the theory that it must be an air elemental and directed Manic to use his drums to shoot a hunk of rock at it. The dragon was destroyed and the training was passed. Manic also learned that his medallion was the most powerful to balance out his lack of physical power.
Moments later, they found out that Trevor, one of Sonic’s friends in the resistance, had been captured by Robotnik. Since Sonic was determined to return to Robotropolis and save him, Sonia and Manic joined him. Manic got them into the stronghold through the route he’d used in his early thief guild missions in the Mouse Patrol when he was a kid, despite Sonia's objections to the idea that anyone was teaching kids to steal. They spied on a conversation between Robotnik and Sonia's fiance, Bartlby. Robotnik had figured he'd know where Sonia was. They also saw Sonia's caretaker, now a serving robot used to wait on the tyrant. When the coast was clear they entered the room, and Sonic and Manic had to talk Sonia out of going after her caretaker...there was no way to return her to normal after all.
While Sonia looked for Sonic’s friend using the computer, Manic busied himself with stealing a few things from Robotnik that he figured might come in handy…which Sonic got on his case for. Before they could go after Trevor, they overheard a conversation between Robotnik and Sleet, talking about the Oracle. His home had been located and Robotnik planned to eliminate him. The hedgehogs decided to warn him as soon as they were done saving Trevor.
They found Trevor and, deeming it the only way to escape, made their way to the hangar to “borrow” a ship...because stealing was wrong. Manic had stolen the frequency harmonizer necessary to board a ship and they escaped the fortress while Trevor acted as their decoy. Robotnik found out and took control of the ship, activating the self-destruct sequence, but Manic had also stolen the master override key and they were able to escape before the ship exploded.
Sonic’s rash actions got them into a small amount of trouble, but while he and Sonia argued about it, Manic’s attention was caught by an apparition of their mother. She’d come to encourage them to devote themselves to each other and their cause, saying that without the Oracle their cause would be lost. Sonic and Sonia made up, but before they could leave, Sleet and Dingo showed up again. The siblings used their weapons to drive them off, then Manic used his drums to down any ships and save the Oracle. He appeared to them, revealing that their teamwork and willingness to help others had unlocked their powers, which could now be used at will.
One day they overheard a transmission from Sleet, who was in pursuit of Argus, the captain of Queen Aleena’s personal guard. The hedgehogs rushed to the rescue in hopes of also being able to learn where the queen was, but weren’t able to get there before he was arrested and roboticized. Instead, they disguised themselves as soundbots and infiltrated the inauguration for Argusbot. Using the power of their medallions, they restored his free will and escaped with him. The freedom was only temporary though, and they had to leave him after only learning that he was supposed to have been meeting the queen in the underground water channel. Manic suggested that they try the thieves’ network for leads as to where the exact meeting place was.
They got one, but it was a trap by Sleet and Dingo. They managed to lure away Argusbot again to restore his free will one more time. He was able to point out the meeting place, where a disguised Dingo was trying to lure Aleena out. Manic's board was busted, so he couldn't go warn her, so he and Sonia had to leave that to Sonic while Argus used the last of his free will to help them join Sonic. Despite the fact that it meant they missed her again, Sonic blocked her exit so she couldn’t be followed by Sleet and Dingo by caving in the tunnel she had run into. Stating that they'd meet her next time, the siblings then hurried off to avoid being captured themselves.
Character Personality:
Manic is a street smart young hedgehog with a cynical outlook and a noticeably snarky attitude, but he's not quite what he appears to be visually. He looks like a total punk, but he's actually pretty sensitive and sometimes insecure, as well as fairly mellow. He is a thief, and a compulsive one at that, but he's not really greedy and his heart is usually in the right place when he steals. Basically, he's just a kid trying to get by the best way he knows how.
As a thief, Manic has a tendency to pick up just about anything from anyone he doesn't at least consider his friend or worse off than himself. This can be anything from an apple to a polo mallet, but he seems to always be thinking on if the items can be used or sold for much-needed money. He runs on the logic that you never know when something will come in handy, and is often right. Even those fancy dishes he stole to sell might be better used as ammo to throw if he's cornered. He has no problems stealing from the wealthy who just flaunt their wealth, but does not steal from his friends, family, and especially not from the poor unless the situation actually calls for it somehow. He also sees nothing wrong with stealing from villains or from ordinary people to keep important items away from villains. He takes a lot of pride in all of his thieving skills, especially since they're needed no matter how often he gets in trouble for his compulsive thefts.
As the series progresses, Manic becomes increasingly suspicious and cynical. Nothing in the world comes free is something that he's always very aware of. Since joining the freedom fighters he's learned more than once he can't trust just anyone, and he becomes suspicious of people who seem too secretive. But even he knows that he can't just mistrust everyone. He'll go through a period of "We're not getting anywhere so why bother?" much later on, but will get past it and redouble his determination. He has been willing to do almost anything for family and the resistance pretty much since he became a freedom fighter regardless of his suspicion, it's just that he'll have learned the hard way to watch who he trusts.
Manic is surprisingly easygoing normally and can crack a joke for no other reason than to lighten the mood, even if it's at someone else's expense. He's not out to hurt anyone when he pokes fun at them though, even if he's less concerned about people he likes less. He doesn't approve of belittling someone behind their back and will either confront someone about an issue or keep it to himself...though he may conspire on how to deal with a person behind their back when he feels the need. If he's suspicious of someone, he'll take that concern to someone he trusts, and will at least investigate to be sure of his suspicions rather than call them on it and possibly cause trouble. This is mostly to keep his friends safe though.
Manic is very much a family person. He loves his siblings and looks forward to reuniting with his mother more than anything else. Even when they don't see eye to eye, he doesn't hesitate to come to their aid when he's needed and he enjoys the time he shares with them whether they're doing the same activity or not. The same is mostly true for his friends, him enjoying their company and going above and beyond for them. He likes kids, though he currently dislikes caring for babies, and is surprisingly good with them. He's proven to be a diligent and attentive sitter once he applied himself, responding quickly to the needs of his charge.
Being both a thief and now a freedom fighter, Manic isn't afraid to stand up for his beliefs or fight for those in need. He's not fearless, since things like creepy old castles and unknown eerie sounds bother him, but he will do what he has to when he has to. He's the most comfortable sneaking through places that most people wouldn't want to, such as the sewers, air vents, and secret passages, but this makes him a bit predictable since those are his first choice if he needs to get somewhere unnoticed. He doesn't have any respect at all for people who exploit or abuse others, and has no qualms about putting them in their place or even exploiting them when possible. He especially hates being exploited, which makes him both angry and disappointed in himself for letting it happen.
Having grown up in below-low-class economy, Manic's never really felt he had a home or place to call his own. He gets defensive about his home, and when people judge him for the habits he's gotten from his lifestyle. He's not really looking for anything fancy in life even after learning that he's a prince and, while he can enjoy a more expensive experience such as a resort or banquet, he's just happy with a room of his own or finding a couple bucks while out and about. There are two things that set him apart from both of his siblings that are noticeable pretty easily, especially while he's around them. He is confident enough with himself to not worry about his looks or needing to state that he looks good, though he at times does mention his own coolness. And he doesn't get into many arguments, either staying out of them or taking the side he feels is more valid, without actually joining in the argument himself.
Aside from music, Manic enjoys thermal surfing on his hoverboard which can also surf waves as well. He loves his board and uses it regularly as a form of transportation when not in the van, being carried by Sonic, or walking. He's a decent mechanic and knows how to service a vehicle and even how to patch up a robot to be usable enough to fly, so he likely does maintenance on his board by himself as well. He's no inventor, but he can navigate technology easily since he's grown up with a lot of it.
Powers and Abilities:
Manic is...relatively plain for a hedgehog, possessing no natural superpowers whatsoever. His speed is sometimes shown as above average, but is nowhere near superspeed, and his physical strength allows him to support or carry a person if he needs to but is equally unremarkable. His strengths are mostly in lock-picking, hacking, pickpocketing, stealing, cracking the combinations on safes, and mechanics to an extent. If it has a lock and he has something that can fit into said lock, he can pick it in no time at all. He's good enough at stealing that he can unnoticed if someone isn't very observant or doesn't know to keep an eye on him...and often even if they do know to. He can figure safe combinations by touch and sound, and his hacking skills are decent.
Through use of his drum medallion Manic can trigger controlled earthquakes via drumming, which can off-balance enemies, cause landslides or literal waves of dirt and rock, collapse buildings or caves, shoot pieces of earth at airborne targets, or simply crack a wall. The drums also fire lasers and the cymbals can be used as a shield that can also deflect laser fire. Once, he was even able to use them to neutralize a giant tornado of Chaos energy to save a town. He can use the drums at will, provided the energy isn't drained from them, and the energy can be recharged on powerful energy sources or gradually over a period of the day. His is the most powerful, but also is at risk to be the most disastrous if he got careless.

So I know Nautlius, like, doesn't run on money or anything, but I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get parts and tools for my board around here. And I know the easy answer's by Bending what I need, but I'm not really tool-making level yet so I gotta pass on that y'know?
So yeah, anyone who knows where I could go, I'd like to hear from you. Thanks.
Third Person:
Manic was definitely not sure about sticking around Nautilus, and not even completely because the whole "truly waking up" idea; which was really far-fetched and maybe slightly suspicious too. There was a legend about a magical city that appeared on Mobius once every four years, coincidentally on their birthday, so that wasn't too out there really. It was mostly Sonic that made this really awkward for him. His brother had his uncle here and a bunch of friends that were complete strangers to him...and he was a stranger to Sonic. His own brother was as good as a stranger to him and he didn't like that feeling. He seemed to be the only one from his world too and it was an uncomfortable feeling, one he wasn't sure that he could deal with for an extended period of time.
With a heavy sigh, he leaned back on the branch that he'd decided to sit on. He'd found this park and figured it was a good place to hang out alone, and climbing this tree was just an added step in trying not to be found by anyone any time soon. He just wanted to not fit in by himself for now while he tried to decide how to deal with this place.
Dealing with it so far had been pretty much just staying on the fringes of the group or just keeping to himself when he could, because he he felt like he didn't fit in here. He felt like he didn't fit in here even less than he had in training with his siblings despite having no powers like they had. Besides that he wasn't good at Bending either, he didn't have any powers to Bend back, and his medallion didn't work here and was just a medallion. So he was just here being useless.
But on the other hand, Nautilus had called and he had answered. Sonic and Sonia wouldn't have just given up and gone home because things were uncomfortable. That was the main thing keeping him here for now. His family wouldn't turn tail so he wasn't being true to them by bailing. He had already been told that when he went home things would go as they were supposed to like he'd never left, so he didn't even have the excuse he'd be missed or things were serious to leave and never come back.
If he was going to stick it out here, he was probably going to have to make nice with Sonic and his friends sooner or later. He should probably do it sooner though, so he reached into his fanny pack to fish out his communicator and looked up Sonic first.
